Business Line reported that Mahindra & Mahindra sold 45,297 vehicles in December, a 6% increase from 42,761 units sold during the same month a year ago.

The company’s domestic sales stood at 42,307 units during the reporting month, a 6% rise, from 39,891 units sold in December 2011.

Mr Pravin Shah CEO of Mahindra & Mahindra said that “High interest rates, rising fuel prices and an overall slowdown in economic growth has kept consumer sentiment low during 2012. This is also evident in the auto industry sales performance for December, which traditionally has been a lean month.”

Mr Shah said that “We do hope that corrective measures are announced and implemented soon bringing in the much needed buoyancy and growth for the industry. At Mahindra, we are happy to maintain our growth momentum even during these challenging times.”

The company in a statement said that the passenger vehicles segment registered an 18% growth at 22,761 units in December as against 19341 units during the same month a year ago.

Meanwhile, the four wheeler commercial segment which includes the passenger and load categories registered a sale of 13,706 units, while the three wheeler segment clocked 5,209 units in December 2012. Exports for the month of December 2012 stood at 2,990 units, a growth of 4% over December 2011.
