This striking image of bright blue water washing up on the shore of a Maldives Island left many people scratching their heads when it first appeared.
While it appears almost magical,in reality the bright blue water washing up on the shore of Vaadhoo Island is the result of bioluminescent phytoplankton being washed up onto the beach.
The glow is caused by a light-producing chemical reaction.Certain types of chemicals when mixed together produce energy,which'excites'other particles on vibration,and generates a glow.
This bioluminescence is very high in several types of Plankton,creating the cold-blue glow seen in the image.
